Screen illustrations are a guide, not measured VLT. Existing glass affects the result; legal requirements depend on your vehicle, window and location.

What tint percentages mean

What the tint percentage means

Every shade above is named after one measurement: VLT, the share of visible light the glass lets through. Get that number the right way round and the rest of the choice is easy.

The limit counts the film and the glass together

Your windows are already tinted from the factory — usually somewhere near 78%. A 35% film on that glass measures closer to 27%, which is how a legal-sounding shade fails a roadside check.

A lower number means a darker window

VLT is the share of visible light that gets through. 5% is limo dark and 70% is barely there, so the tighter a state writes its law, the higher the number it quotes.

Medical exemptions need paperwork

Most states allow a darker front shade with a signed medical exemption for light-sensitive conditions. It has to be kept in the vehicle, and the rules for it are state-specific.

“They did a phenomenal job on my truck! No more fishbowl!! Fit my truck into his schedule and made it happen pretty quick! (Doors & shield) *Update* Next day, the window tint has done its job and shrunk with the heat! All smooth! No dirt specks, no bubbles, or scratches! Will use for all of my window tinting needs from now on!”

“It was great working with Bryan of Sunny Days! He was prompt with all of his communications. Came out to our home, he asked just the right questions to determine our window tinting needs, promptly provided us with a proposal (quote) that we felt was reasonable, scheduled our date to have the windows done. He arrived for the installation appointment and as he was doing the front window he came and got us so he could show us the difference in a window he tinted and the other side he hadn’t done yet and it was trippy how we could feel the difference. After the installation he went over the window care. We have been happy about our decision to tint our windows and to go with Bryan of Sunny Days! Highly recommended!!”

“Edit: I came back and had my front 2 windows tinted, and they came out great! This is definitely a place that has lots of return customers. Bryan at Sunny Days is awesome! Super knowledgeable. He answered all of my questions, and helped me make a decision on what I ultimately wanted for my windshield tint brow. He has a waiting room and was very fast doing the install! I would reccomend people to get their car tinted here. I sure will get future work done here.”

Questions

Questions about tint shades

See all our FAQs
What tint shades can I choose from?

From darkest to lightest: Nebula 4%, Helios 20%, Equinox 33%, Stratum 50% and Photon 72%. Darker shades give more privacy, lighter ones keep a factory look, and we make sure the front windows stay legal.

How dark can I tint my windows in Indiana?

In Indiana, the front side windows must let in at least 30% of light, and the rear side windows and back window can take at least 30%. On SUVs, trucks and vans, the rear windows can take any shade. We check the law for your car before we start.

Is ceramic tint worth it?

Yes, if heat matters to you. Ceramic film keeps far more heat out without having to look darker: Kepler IR (blocks up to 81% of infrared heat) and Kepler IR+ (blocks up to 98% of infrared heat).

When can I roll my windows down after tinting?

Keep them up for 3 to 5 days while the film dries, and wait a week before cleaning the inside of the glass. Use a soft cloth and an ammonia-free cleaner.

How much does car window tinting cost?
